Shinty again on Factory Field

Shinty was again played on the Factoy Field on Thursday as part of HHEAPS  coaching programme,   see below  report from Camanachd  Association

"Shinty returned to Boleskine Shinty Club’s old pitch at Foyers on Thursday 20th March when the eight Primary 4 – 7 pupils at Foyers school held their week 4 session of the HHEAPS coaching programme there. Normally the Foyers children travel to join Stratherrick School pupils for the Shinty coaching but as Stratherrick couldn’t take part this week it was a great opportunity to try out the old field on their doorstep. The pavilion has been moved to a new home at The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore and one set of goalposts have disappeared but there is still a unique atmosphere at the mossy pitch on the shores of Loch Ness. Heavy rain did not deter the players, some of whom were playing with wooden sticks and helmets for the first time, and it is hoped that some of them will go on to star for Boleskine teams of the future at their new home at Smith Park, Inverarnie. "

The Sutherland Cup Final 2013 between Ballachulish and Lochcarron  was played on the 27th July at Smith Park Inveranrie. This is the first time a shinty national final has being played on Boleskine pitch,  though we previously hosted three  Strathdearn cup  finals . The final throw up time was 4pm to facilitate television, as the match was broadcast live on BBC ALBA to the whole of the UK . This is the first time a live sporting event from the Strathnairn district has been on national TV .  Prior  to the match there was a pre match luncheon and after the game there was a reception with a formal three course dinner for ninety people, consisting of both teams, Camanachd Association & Sponsors guests, held in the Farr hall.  The Boleskine Club organised and delivered all the catering for the meals held in the hall, as well as running the bar and a hot food stall including a barbeque.   A tremendous team effort by the Boleskine Committee, team members and supporters went in to ensuring the park  was in pristine condition and the whole day event was a success .

The final contesting  teams both one team clubs play their league shinty in different areas  Ballachulish play in South Div 2 , whilst Lochcarron who play in North Div 3 ,having reverted from a two team club (with senior and junior teams ) to a single junior club at the start of this season.

The match was played in sunshine, albeit with one or two heavy rain showers, in front a good support from both teams along with a few neutrals It was a very tight match between the teams, each having the upper hand on various stages and at full time both teams were locked together at one goal apiece.  Extra time was played, and it was only in the final 10 minutes that Ballachulish scored twice to take the trophy south wards by three goals to one .

Foyers Shinty Pavilion Relocation

In early November, of the Stratherrick & Foyers Community Council approach the Scottish and Southern Energy (S&SE) with a view to getting the Shinty Pavilion at Foyers demolished. The reason being the Pavilion was no longer in use, constantly subject to vandalism and public safety grounds.  Late in December  the matter was brought to the attention of Boleskine  Shinty Club, the  current lessee and by that time, it had been already agreed that the pavilion would be demolished .  As the person running the Shinty Club web site I was dismayed by this decision but the dice was cast. I related the fate of the pavilion to a former resident of the district who in his youth had captained Boleskine, Teep Macdonald now in his late eighties and staying in Inverness .  Teep reiterated that it was an absolute disgrace that something so intrinsically associated within the memory of locals should be destroyed. It should be preserved for posterity and relocated in somewhere like the Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore.   I concurred fully with this suggestion and contacted former Shinty Association President John Mackenzie, who worked in the museum. The museum Curator Bob Powel, said they would be delighted to accommodate the pavilion as it would fit in perfectly with a project  Shinty Heritage in Badenoch and house the exhibition. They were in the process of laying out a sports park at the museum where the pavilion could be erected. Bob then approached the S&SE manager at Foyers, Mike Cruickshank. The S&SE were happy to agree that the Pavillion would not now be demolished, but relocated in Newtonmore. The dismantling of the pavilion will be done by construction apprentices of the Highland Small Communities Housing Trust under supervision of the museum staff.    So though no longer in the area, the future sympathetically restored  Pavilion can continue to be utilised  for sporting events as the British Aluminium Company intended . Former users of the Pavilion can take a stroll down memory lane as they will be able to visit it at its new location. This week commencing 4th June the Pavilion is being dismantled,  after 82 years of presiding at the Factory Field, and will be erected at the Folk Museum  in the late summer early autumn  .  Will  post updates on website on Pavilion project  progress  and when it is opening to the public at its new location.

Boleskine Match Reporter

Volunteers are required to write a short match report on club games, this greatly enhances the fixture page and is of interest to club supporters who are unable to attend games because of distance or infirmity . This was a feature of the fixtures this page and was done for many years by the Alister Chisholm who due to family commitments is unable to do it over the last year or the intermediate  future . For any budding reporters this is a window of opportunity which would raise the profile of the team, plus enabling the volunteer to gain experience in writing a balanced report on the Shinty club matches. If interested contact the web site by sending an E Mail
